Well, here we are at the end with mixed feelings and many questions. Do artists dream too much to work with the whole city? Is the character of our fellow Jordanians too suspicious and perhaps lacking in sense of humor?
We created a melody and released it to the city of Amman and got many people to engage through media in a phenomenon that affects their everyday life, and most importantly worked with people otherwise overlooked by citizens and government alike; the system of gas distribution.
What does it mean to do a public intervention? How much control can we realistically have when working with the whole city? Success is measurable on many levels. Importantly, artists played instigators in discussion and perhaps even change, we shall see what the future holds!

حسنا ، نحن هنا في النهاية بمشاعر مختلطة ، وأسئلة كثيرة. حلم كبير من الفنانين للعمل مع المدينة كلها؟ وهل هو صفة من أخواننا الأردنيين للشك وربما يفتقروا روح الدعابة؟
أنشأنا النغمة ووزعت على مدينة عمان وحصلنا على مشاركة الناس من خلال وسائل الاعلام في هذه الظاهرة التي تؤثر على حياتهم اليومية ، والأهم من ذلك، عملنا مع قطاع منسيا الى حدٍ ما من المواطنين والجهات المعنية ، هو نظام توزيع الغاز
ماذا يعني ذلك القيام بمداخلة في القطاع العام؟ بالواقع كيف نسيطر على العمل في المدينة كلها؟ مقاييس متعددة للنجاح. والأهم من ذلك ، لعب الفنانين دور المحرضين في النقاش، وربما دوراً في التغيير، وسنرى ما يخبئه المستقبل

Also today only rumors of the melody, we felt like we were following a ghost around the city, everyone was talking about it! And we talked about the project at Makan.

و اليوم كما الحن من الشائعات فقط، شعرنا وكأننا في أعقاب الأشباح في أنحاء المدينة ، وكان الجميع يتحدث عن ذلك! ثم تحدثنا عن هذا المشروع في مكان.

Today we were driving in the streets of Amman, together with our documentation team, to find out whether the melody was played. Unfortunately we haven't found one car and tried again and again to explain the project. You may have heard the new melody!?

اليوم كنا القيادة في شوارع عمان ، جنبا إلى جنب مع فريق التوثيق، لمعرفة ما إذا كان النغم في الشارع. لسوء الحظ أننا لم نجد سيارة واحدة ، وحاولنا مرارا وتكرارا لشرح المشروع. هل سمعت اللحن الجديد!؟

We still haven't heard the melody in the streets, spending our time always in the guts of the gas car system! The rumor is still growing that more and more cars are playing the new melody. People are calling us and also drivers report from several areas. The melody conquers the city step by step, but we need to produce more tapes for the growing number of cars! We heard that the drivers duplicated the tapes by themselves! Accompanied by our good spirit Abu Waleed we were visiting distributors and drivers, delivered more tapes and felt like being in a election campaign. We have the feeling that tomorrow will be the first real day where we will be able to hear a new sound in the city!

اليوم لم نسمع النغمة الجديدة ونحن نمضي وقتنا في نتفاصيل نظام توزيع الغاز. الاشاعة ان عدد السيارات التي تستخدم النغمة الجديدة تنتشر وتتزايد في المدينة. لا تتوقف المكالمات من الناس, الاصدقاء واسائقي السيارات من جميع انحاء المدينة, وعلينا انتاج المزيد من الاشرطة لتلبية الطلبات! بمرافقة صديقنا ابو وليد نزور الموزعين والسائقين لتزويدهم بالاشرطة, شعرنا وكأننا في حملة انتخابية! لدينا شعور بأن غدا سيكون اول يوم فعلا نسمع صوت جديد في المدينة

Where is the melody? Rumors said that it was played in some parts, but we didn't hear it. We are on the street now, trying to make it happen, talking to drivers and distributors. Most of them like the new melody, but they are still a little bit afraid of selling less gas. All tapes disappeared...500 for 340 gas cars??! We found out that the number is much higher that we knew, but nobody knows the exact number in this jungle of gas cars. The range is from 700 up to 1000!

أين النغمة الجديدة؟ الشائعات أن البعض يستخدمها في المدينة ، ولكننا لم نسمعها. نحن الآن في الشارع ، في محاولة لتحقيق ذلك ، والتحدث الى السائقين والموزعين. الاغلبية معجب باللحن, ولاكن البعض متردد لاسباب متعلقة بالبيع. تم تةزيع جميع الأشرطة ... 500 شريط ل 340 سيارة غاز؟! اكتشفنا ان الرقم هو أعلى بكثير منما توقعنا، ولكن لا أحد يعرف العدد الحقيقي في هذه الغابة من سيارات الغاز. قد يكون بين700 حتى 1000 سيارة !

The Big Meeting

In an intense meeting the project was presented to the gas distributors and the press. It was also the first chance to hear the melody. The first reaction was positive, but followed up with a lively discussion which was only interrupted by the fire alarm. After hot beverages and pastries the tapes were handed out. Now the project is in the hands of all the gas car drivers in Amman. We believe in you!

في اجتماع كبير مع الصحافة وموزعو الغاز اطلقنا النغمة الجديدة. وكان أول رد فعل إيجابي ، ولكن مع متابعة النقاش الحيوي الذي قطع بسبب إنذار الحريق. وبعد المشروبات الساخنة والحلويات تم تسليم الأشرطة . هذا المشروع هو الآن في أيدي جميع سائقي سيارات الغاز في عمان. نحن نؤمن بكم

On Saturday the 5th December there will be the Big Meeting for all gas distributors and the press. According to that we were searching the right location. Interesting rooms opened their doors...but for sure this ones were too interesting.
So the meeting will be in the National Gallery.

سيعقد الاجتماع الكبير يوم السبت ٥ ديسمبر / كانون اول لجميع اصحاب وكالات توزيع الغاز وللصحافة والإعلام. لقد بحثنا عن موقعٍ مناسب، وفتتحت امامنا ابواب مختلفة.... معظمها مثيرة وعجيبة! وفي النهاية تم الاتفاق مع المتحف الوطني للفنون الجميلة على عقد الجتماع بين الاعمال الفنية الشهيرة .

A fusion of people, a fusion of music? Not exactly. We listened and talked to experts to tell us about how music today in Jordan is characterized, and there hasn't been much influence from the music of minority groups. Mainly the music developed in 2 genre's; songs of the peasants and the songs of the desert.

The Jordanian song today is the patriotic, national song made from aggressive lyrics juxtaposed on a nostalgic musical composition. Musicologists are concerned about this new trend of song that is even being played in weddings!! So what happened to the sweet hospitable Jordanian??

عادة ما يؤدي الاندماج في الاعراق في بلدٍ واحد الى تأثيرٍ على الطابع الموسيقى. ولكن هذا الحال لا ينطبق في الاردن. استمعنا لموسيقى مختلفة، وتحدثنا مع باحثين في هذا المجال، واتضح ان الاغنية الاردنية لم تتأثر بموسيقى الاقليات. تأثرت الاغنية الاردنية بالبيئة ونتج نوعان وهما لحن قروي واللحن البدوي.

الاغنية الاردنية اليوم اغنية وطنية مركبة من لحنٌ حزين وكلمات الحماسية والعدوانية. عُلماء الموسيقى قلقون لهذه الموضى الجديدة التي نسمعها حتى في الاعراس! هذا حدث للاردني الذي يتصف بالكرم واللطف؟

Amman is one of the youngest cities in the region physically spreading over 60 km2, and has a charming geography of hills and valleys. While Jordan carries a long history since the the neolithic ages; the modern city of Amman formed over the last 100 years. Ammanites today are 2.6 million persons who are truly a fusion society. The family of Jordanians were joined over time by people from near and far including The Caucasus, Syria, Armenia, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

The characteristics of Jordanians is reflected in seriousness reflected in the famous knitted brow and potential frown. Tea drinking can be considered a national sport alongside football and german cars!

مدينة عمان من اصغر المدن الموجودة في المنطقة، حيت تبلغ مساحة حوالى ٦٠ كم مربع، وجغرافية المدينة تتميز بالجبال والوديان. وتنقسم عمان الى عمان القديمة التى يعود تاريخها الى العصر النيوليثيك، وعمان الحديثة والتى يرجع تكونها الى ١٠٠ عام الأخيرة. ويبلغ عدد سكان عمان حوالي ٢،٦ مليون نسمة تتميز بالتعدد والإختلاف حيث هناك عائلات من بلاد الشام، الكقفقاس، سوريا، السعودية، فلسطين، ارمينيا ومصر بالإضافة الى العائلات الآردنية، وهذا الإختلاف والتعدد ساهم في خلق تلك الثقاقة العمانية

لكن رغم هذا الإختلاف و التميز في الثقافة، تبقى الساكنة يغلب عليها طابع الجدية، العبسة المشهورة وحبكة الجبين ويعد شرب الشاي وإقتناء السيارات الألمانية من بين الرياضات الوطنية المفضلة الى جانب كرة القدم

The research for this project started on the 18th of October 2009, and will in the coming weeks involve an exploration of the way in which these distribution cars work around the city, keeping in mind the geography of hills and valleys of the city, and how this affects the echoing of sound around the city.

In Amman, the only sound which is allowed to exist next to the call for prayer: is the sound of the gas cars. Out of every corner you are able to hear it, this mysterious, smooth whispering. Nobody knows were it comes from, it is just there, everywhere. It is a long story where this melody came from, but the short explanation is like this:

In 1999, the government and citizens united wanted to stop the awful honking.The minister of interior called for several very serious meetings to find the perfect melody. The list of participants was really impressing: a representative from the ministry of energy, from the ministry of civil defense, from transportation circle, from the traffic police administration, from the police capital, of general safety circle and a representative of the syndicate of fuel.

Funnily, in the first meeting there wasn't the head of the distribution circuit of gas. In this governmental issue, each participant was challenged to bring a tape with their ideas to find the perfect melody. They wanted a euphony to identify with, they wanted to choose a calming melody to help people survive the dangers of gas trafficking. The attendees seemed to have fun and composed their own melodies or just sang on tapes, which were then all heard in the meetings. Finally they reached the perfect melody, which was recorded completely by chance by Yousef Abdul Jaleel who made a recording of an old song that reminded of the melody of the ice-cream cars. And through a process of democracy, his melody was elected. A new sound was born! Now they had to take away the fear of the citizens, to accept this new thing in their lives.

لعل الصوت الوحيد الذي يسمح بسماعه في عمان، إلى جانب صوت الأذان، هو صوت سيارات بيع الغاز. فبالإمكان سماع هذا الهمس الناعم الغريب من كل زاوية. لا أحد يعرف من أين يأتي، حسبه أنه هناك، في كل مكان. حكاية هذا النغم ومصدره طويلة، ولكن أقصر تفسير له هو ما يلي:

في عام 1999 أراد كل من الحكومة والناس معا إيقاف الزمر المريع. ودعا وزير الداخلية إلى عقد عدد من الاجتماعات الجادة لإيجاد نغمة مناسبة تماما. كانت قائمة الأشخاص المساهمين تبعث على الإعجاب فعلا، فقد تضمنت: ممثلين من وزارة الطاقة، ومن الدفاع المدني ومن دائرة المواصلات وشرطة المرور، ومن رئاسة الشرطة، لدائرة السلامة العامة وممثل من نقابة عمال الطاقة.

والمضحك في الامر أن الاجتماع الأول لم يشمل المسؤول عن توزيع الغاز. في هذا الشأن الحكومي، وُضع كل مشارك أمام التحدي لجلب شريط مسجل يمثل فكرة كل واحد منهم عن إيجاد النغمة المناسبة. أردوا صوتا رخيما للمطابقة معه، كما أرادوا اختيار نغمة تبعث على الهدوء من أجل مساعدة الناس على النجاة من مخاطر حركة مرور الغاز. يبدو أن الذين حضروا الاجتماع أمضوا وقتا ممتعا بتأليفهم نغماتهم أو مجرد تسجيل غنائهم على الأشرطة السمعية والتي استمع إليها الحضور في ذلك اللقاء. ثم توصلوا أخيرا للنغمة المناسبة والتي، عن طريق الصدفة، كانت قد سجلت كاملة من قبل يوسف عبد الجليل الذي قام بتسجيل أغنية قديمة أعادت على الذاكرة نغمة سيارات بيع المثلجات. وعن طريق الممارسة الديمقراطية، اختيرت نغمته. وهكذا وُلد صوت جديد! كان عليهم الآن التخلص من خوف المواطنين وتقبلهم لهذا الشيء الجديد في حياتهم
